Two common misconceptions about dance classes

Here are some common misconceptions about dance classes.

Dance classes are only for those who aspire to be professional dancers

Many people who love to dance at social occasions or in their own homes, just for the fun of it, don't go to dance classes because they assume that these classes are filled with those who want to be professional dancers. This assumption might make a person avoid these classes, not only because they don't want a career in dancing but also because they worry that the other 'aspiring professionals' in these classes will be far more skilled than them. They may also be concerned that the classes will have a formal, serious atmosphere where they'll be expected to do some very intense dance practice.

The truth is that although people who would like a career in this performing art do often begin by going to these classes before they progress to attending dedicated performing arts colleges, many of the class attendees are people who view dancing as a fun hobby or form of exercise. Most dance classes that are offered to the general public are designed to teach dance skills in a very relaxed, fun manner, and as such, the teachers of these classes won't typically put pressure on the attendees to work extremely hard or be too critical of them. Furthermore, these classes are typically categorised according to the level of dance experience and skills they require. As such, newbies can easily see which of the classes are beginner-friendly and will be filled with others who are at the same skill level as them.

Dance classes are only for young people

Another misconception is that dance classes are only for young people. It's true that there are many dance classes set up specifically for children, teenagers and young adults. However, dancing is an activity that can be enjoyed at any age and there are many dance classes in towns and cities that are open to adults of all ages.

People who are approaching or in their elderly years, for example, can benefit greatly from going to these classes. Doing so can give them an opportunity to socialise (many seniors have issues with being isolated and lonely) in a very informal and friendly setting. It can also provide them with some gentle but effective exercise that is so enjoyable that it doesn't feel like a boring workout but simply like a fun activity. This is especially valuable for the elderly, who might be at the point in their lives where they are beginning to experience a reduction in their flexibility, cardiovascular fitness and mobility.
